Cover Drive
A cricketing love story…
About the Song
One of the most common shots played in cricket is the Cover Drive – but not all cover drives are equal.
A mixture of timing and technique make it a visually satisfying stroke and some players simply look better playing it.
Commentators will often refer to a particularly well-played one as “a sumptuous cover drive”, a commonly used phrase which inspired this song.
It made me realise that a lot of cricket commentary is faintly suggestive, if not downright filthy, so I came up with a song celebrating the shot using some risque double entendres.
As a further mental excercise I decided to write it using only two repeating chords.

Lyrics
There was some nibble in her wicket
But her bounce was true
So I played her with a delicate touch
Then I got a little funky – but not too much
I stroked her through the off-side
And caressed her with intent
And I flirted with the ball on the rise
She’s every single shot but she’s sumptuous as a cover drive
She’s my cover drive
My cover drive
She’s my cover drive
My cover drive
Well I rolled her through my fingers
And she showed me middle stump
And I gave the Kookaburra some flight
I didn’t bowl a maiden over
But I’ll get it right
My googly almost did her
But she tickled it so fine
Then she spanked me as she started to thrive
But nothing got me going more than her cover drive
She’s my cover drive
My cover drive
She’s my cover drive
My cover drive
I was fielding in the cordon
And I gave her a sledge
And she spooned me the easiest catch
But I dropped her at the critical moment – and I lost the match
But it’s a series that we’re playing
So I’ve still got some time
And it’s going to be one hell of a ride
Now the boundary line awaits the ball from her cover drive
She’s my cover drive
My cover drive
She’s my cover drive
My cover drive
She’s my cover drive
